The assessment takes 30-45 minutes to complete. It consists of six timed sections including scenario-based questions, multiple-choice answers, and visual stimuli such as facial expressions and 2D/3D graphics.
It measures emotional intelligence as an ability rather than asking you to rate yourself. The assessment combines workplace scenarios, visual emotion recognition, and interactive tasks, with each section designed to measure a specific emotional skill. Responses are evaluated using expert-consensus scoring rather than self-ratings, providing a more objective assessment of emotional intelligence.
Yes. Research suggests that emotional intelligence can be developed through deliberate practice, feedback, coaching, and reflection. The final EQ report we generate identifies strengths and development opportunities across each emotional skill, together with practical recommendations to help you.
We aim to make the emotional intelligence assessment accessible to as many people as possible. However, because some tasks involve recognising facial expressions, interpreting emotional situations, and working within time limits, certain conditions may affect performance. Please contact us at hello@the-innerview.com before completing the assessment if you require reasonable adjustments.
Yes. The report explains your results across each emotional dimension and includes practical development recommendations, suggested exercises, coaching ideas, and learning resources tailored to your profile. You can also explore your results further in 1-to-1 EQ coaching or counselling sessions.
This assessment is still in development and is not live yet, so no results data is collected or stored through it today. When it launches, your data will be encrypted and stored securely, your results will be visible only to you unless you choose to share them, and we will follow strict data privacy protocols and never share your individual data with third parties. You will be able to request access to your data or ask for it to be deleted at any time by contacting us directly. See our Privacy Policy and our Ethical Standards and BPS Compliance page for more detail.
The assessment is designed primarily for development rather than selection. It should not be used as the sole basis for hiring, promotion, or other employment decisions. We strongly recommend using it alongside structured interviews, performance data, and other relevant information. Relying solely on any psychometric tool in employment decisions may carry legal risk under UK employment law, including the Equality Act 2010. The assessment is not designed for high-stakes selection without supporting context. Like any single instrument, it is best read alongside other evidence about the person or the role.
No. This is an organisational development tool, not a clinical instrument. It does not diagnose any psychological condition, neurodevelopmental difference, or medical issue. If you have concerns about your mental health or a specific condition, please consult a qualified clinical professional.
We are committed to making the assessment accessible. If you have a condition, disability, or neurodevelopmental difference that may affect your experience, contact us at hello@the-innerview.com before starting. We will discuss adjustments such as extended time or alternative formats where possible.
It measures emotional intelligence as an ability. That means it aims to determine how well you perceive, use, understand, and manage emotions, rather than asking you to rate your own emotional intelligence. It follows the four-branch Mayer-Salovey-Caruso model and is organised into six timed sections, each targeting a different emotional skill: [1] recognising emotions in faces, [2] reading emotion from real situations, [3] appraising and responding to emotional scenarios, [4] using emotions to support thinking, [5] understanding how emotions combine and change, and [6] managing emotions in yourself and others.
Because it measures ability, your answers are compared against responses drawn from a blend of expert judgement and wider consensus, not scored on how you rate yourself. Results sit on a standardised scale with clear bands, and each score is shown with a confidence range so you can see how precisely it has been measured. Several sections are intentionally time-limited because emotional intelligence in everyday situations often depends on making effective judgements without unlimited time to reflect.
It is far harder to fake than a typical assessment. Traditional tests ask you to rate your own emotional skills, which is easy to inflate. Ours asks you to demonstrate the skill by choosing the correct option, and responses are evaluated against criterion-correct answers derived from expert consensus. Simply wanting to look emotionally intelligent does not raise your score. The timing and a set of response-style checks further limit guessing and careless answering. Also, the sections increase in cognitive complexity rather than in difficulty per item. Earlier sections rely on rapid recognition. Later sections need context integration, reasoning across multiple states, and prediction of how emotions will change over time.
You receive a detailed report covering your overall EQ score, results across the four emotional intelligence branches, and detailed scores for each of the six assessed skill areas. The report explains what your results mean in practice, highlighting strengths, development opportunities, and how your emotional skills may influence communication, relationships, leadership, decision-making, and performance at work. It also includes personalised recommendations, coaching suggestions, and practical actions to help strengthen emotional intelligence over time. As our dataset continues to grow, reports will also include comparisons against relevant benchmark groups to provide extra context for interpreting your results.
We use several approaches to improve confidence in the final results. These include psychometric validation, criterion-based scoring, response-style analysis, and ongoing calibration as additional assessment data is collected. Alongside your scores, our agentic psychometric intelligence system checks for patterns such as unusually rapid responding, omissions, or inconsistent answers.
Assessment scoring is continuously refined as our research dataset grows. Responses from consenting participants are used to improve expert-consensus weights, score band thresholds, and comparison benchmarks. Our agentic psychometric intelligence system reviews the new data and recalibrates the scoring model every 300 completed assessments or every 30 days, whichever comes first. Individual results are never changed retrospectively without notification, but future reports benefit from progressively more precise calibration as the evidence base expands.
The Inner View EQ Assessment measures emotional intelligence as an ability, performance-based and skill-oriented. This assessment asks you to solve emotional problems and choose the most effective response, so it measures what you can do rather than how skilled you believe you are. It is far harder to fake than a self-report measure.
